Named occasions, staffed properly

A sangeet with live dhol, a baraat that moves down a street, a ceremony that needs a lapel mic nobody sees, a reception that turns into a club at eleven. Each is a separate job with separate kit, and we brief them that way rather than calling the whole thing 'evening entertainment'.

What a DJ is actually doing up there

Watching the floor, mostly. Counting how many people came back after the speeches, spotting the table that has not moved yet, deciding whether the aunties get their song now or in twenty minutes when it will land harder. That judgement is the whole job, and it is the part you cannot write into a playlist.

Then there is the mic. Announcements, cueing the cake, handing over to a live act and taking the room back afterwards without the energy dropping through the floor. We would rather a DJ who can hold a room in two languages than one with a bigger record collection.
