A Wedding in the Lancaster Ballroom at The Savoy

The Savoy · Strand, London

The Savoy has been throwing parties on the Strand since before amplified music existed. For this wedding the Lancaster Ballroom became a garden in high spring, and the dancefloor was cut to fit the garden rather than the other way round.

Scope

The Savoy, A garden grown inside the ballroom

The brief

A garden grown inside the ballroom

Working with wedding planner Snob Events, the brief was a garden in high spring: blossom, cypress, stone urns and a fountain, carried on a curved LED screen that wrapped round into the corner of the room, so from the tables the garden simply kept going. Nothing was hidden to make space for it. The chandeliers, the arched mirrored windows and the rococo plasterwork all stayed on show, lit as part of the design.

The Savoy, A dancefloor cut to its own shape

The floor

A dancefloor cut to its own shape

Instead of the usual square, we built the floor in house and cut it to shape: a long walkway opening into a circle, laid straight over the Savoy's carpet. The tables, long runs and rounds, were made to sit against that shape, so the room had a route through it and somewhere for the night to point. Overhead hung the couple's florist's suspended canopy, and the lighting worked around it: gobo arcs across the ceiling plaster, warm uplight on the gilding, texture moving over the floor all evening.

The Savoy, One system for the speeches, the band and the DJ

The sound

One system for the speeches, the band and the DJ

A live band and a DJ shared the night, and both ran on one PA, designed and tuned in house for this specific room. The Lancaster Ballroom is mostly plaster and mirror, which is beautiful and bounces everything. We'd rather tune one system properly than let two rigs fight each other: done that way the speeches sit clear, the band gets its weight, and the DJ inherits a floor that already sounds right. None of it arrived by magic either. Scaffold towers in an empty ballroom, flightcases through the hotel corridors, LED panels carried in by hand, every fixture tested before it went up.
